Hace aproximadamente una década, al llegar al municipio de Nochistlán, en el Sur de Zacatecas, a 155 kilómetros de la ciudad; al arribar a la cabecera municipal de este pequeño municipio, se daba la bienvenida a los visitantes con un vistoso anuncio que explicitaba: «Bienvenidos a Nochistlán: tierra de grandes músicos2», y efectivamente, a quienes hemos sido visitantes asiduos, con el transcurso de los años hemos podido constatar que Nochistlán, Zacatecas, tiene la cualidad de poseer una vida cultural y musical muy rica e interesante, tanto por la cantidad como por la calidad de sus agrupaciones musicales.
Aquí podemos encontrar un gran número de bandas de instrumentos de viento, grupos norteños, tríos románticos, conjuntos versátiles y especialmente una importante actividad mariachera que es sumamente apreciada y valorada a nivel nacional por agrupaciones como: El Mariachi Juvenil Tecalitlán, el Mariachi América de Jesús Rodríguez de Híjar, los Camperos de Nati Cano, Los Monarcas, el Mariachi Sol de México, El Nuevo Tecalitlán, El Internacional de México y el mismo Mariachi Vargas de Tecatitlán, dado que en diferentes etapas y en diferentes contextos, los músicos nochistlenses han transitado y participado en conjuntos de esta alzada; es decir entre los más selectos del mundo del mariachi, destacándose los nochistlenses siempre por su calidad interpretativa. En la actualidad, a pesar de ser un municipio pequeño se pueden contar una docena de mariachis entre tradicionales y modernos.
Es pertinente señalar que a pesar de la existencia de numerosos mariachis en México y en el mundo, es a la vez muy contradictorio el que muy pocos pueblos de México conserven la auténtica tradición y el estilo campesino de origen. Y para los zacatecanos, es motivo de particular vanagloria que entre los poquísimos enclaves mariacheros que se preservan en nuestro País, destaca este municipio zacatecano por su fuerza musical, autenticidad y estilo propios.
Para ilustrar la importancia del mariachi en la vida de este municipio, les comentaremos que en noviembre del 2012, Nochistlán fue declarado el 5° Pueblo Mágico Zacatecano. Al respecto, citaremos a Sebastián Avelar Rodríguez, quien fuera Director de Turismo del Municipio mencionado en el período 2010-2013, y Secretario del Comité Pro Pueblo Mágico, que en su momento nos informó:
“La música de nuestros mariachis, constituyó un elemento definitivo para lograr la declaratoria de Nochistlán como Pueblo Mágico…nos sentimos muy orgullosos, muy ricos en cultura musical y específicamente en la de mariachi”.
Todo lo anteriormente comentado, desde luego no se ha producido por generación espontánea, como toda expresión cultural, la vida cultural nochistlense también es una construcción social, una contribución humana de largo aliento en la que ciertamente han incidido una multiplicidad de factores a través del tiempo.
Entre esa multiplicidad de factores que favorecieron el actual desarrollo musical mencionaremos: en noviembre de 1893 nació en Nochistlán, Zacatecas, un músico violinista llamado Josafat Puentes Véliz (padre de Nicolás Puentes quien es nuestro músico homenajeado), y pocos años después, en 1900 su hermano Filomeno, también violinista. Ambos se integraron a los conjuntos jaraberos de su región en su tiempo; que en realidad constituía el movimiento mariachero característico del Norte de Jalisco y Sur de Zacatecas. A finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, los mariachis tradicionales tenían como instrumentación un par de violines, una guitarra de 13 cuerdas y tambora, al que se ha sumado en la actualidad la vihuela y el guitarrón. A estos dos hermanos violinistas Josafat y Filomeno Puentes, fueron los patriarcas de un numeroso linaje musical, del cual han descendido unos 50 músicos mariachis (entre los que algunos ya pertenecen a la cuarta generación) que se han asentado en varias partes del territorio nacional, iniciado desde luego por Nochistlán, esparciéndose a diferentes estados de la República Mexicana integrando diferentes conjuntos de este tipo; hecho que ha propiciado una consecuente difusión de la música mariachera y que ha arribado hasta los Estados Unidos con descendientes de este linaje musical.
En el transcurrir de más de un siglo, este linaje familiar ha corrido la misma suerte que la evolución del mariachi; es decir, este conjunto transitó de las comunidades campesinas a las grandes urbes, y de mariachi tradicional con tambora al mariachi moderno que actualmente todos conocemos.
Entre los descendientes de Josafat Puentes Veliz, mención especial merece el nacimiento de 2 violinistas mariacheros en los años cincuenta: Nicolás e Hipólito Puentes Macías (1952 y 1954 respectivamente), que siendo muy niños recibieron las primeras lecciones musicales de su padre Josafat, y buscando la vida acompañando a su padre, muy pronto emigraron a la Ciudad de México, y a los 13 y 11 años de edad respectivamente, hicieron de la Plaza Garibaldi su escuela, su casa, su centro de operaciones y sueños, teniendo, de inicio, que incorporarse a los mariachis más modestos, de los cuales en no pocas oraciones fueron amablemente despedidos; pero en corto tiempo, con el talento, ejemplo familiar, y el estudio disciplinado, ya en los años sesenta llegaron a integrarse a los mejores mariachis actuantes de la Ciudad de México.
En ocaciones juntos y en otras por separado, grabaron discos con mariachis importantes como El Mariachi de Román palomar, el Mariachi Oro y Plata, en el México 70, en el mariachi Tenochtitlan de Heriberto Aceves, El Mariachi América y el Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán, teniendo además la ocasión de convivir y compartir los escenarios con cantantes como: Lola Beltrán, Eulalio González “El Piporro”, José Alfredo Jiménez, Cuco Sánchez, Flor Silvestre, Tomás Méndez, Lucha Villa, Luis Aguilar, Las hermanas Huerta, Los hermanos Zaizar, Miguel Aceves Mejía, Javier Solís, en síntesis con toda esa pléyade de cantantes de la época de oro de la música mariachera mexicana. También juntos y por separado, pisaron los escenarios musicales y culturales a lo largo y ancho del país; en otras ocasiones difundieron nuestra música mexicana por algunos países de Sudamérica, los Estados Unidos de América del Norte, Cuba y algunos países de Europa.
Para los años setenta, y ochentas teniendo como escenario la Ciudad de México, los descendientes de Filomeno y Josafat Puentes, y entre ellos Nicolás e Hipólito Puentes Macías, dejaron una huella imborrable en el ámbito mariachero de la Ciudad de México, especialmente en los principales foros para la música mariachera como El Greco, La Taberna de Tecpan, la Plaza Santa Cecilia, El Teatro México, El Teatro Blanquita, arribando incluso al Palacio de Bellas Artes. Siendo un pasaje muy entrañable y trascendental para La Familia Puentes, la constitución del Mariachi Nochistlán que se formó exclusivamente con hijos y nietos de Josafat y Filomeno Puentes, alcanzando un gran éxito musical en los años setenta, un audacia musical familiar obtenida a pulso en el corazón cultural del País y que aún se conserva en la memoria de los viejos músico del género.
Sin embargo, quizá la labor más importante de los hermanos Puentes, fue la realizada a su regreso a Nochistlán en el año de 1985, ya que a partir de entonces Nicolás e Hipólito Puentes, se dedicaron a transmitir con generosidad toda la experiencia y formación profesional que ellos habían adquirido principalmente en la Capital del País, transmitiéndola a través de la enseñanza y la divulgación cultural entre niños y jóvenes.
Con ello, las nuevas generaciones de músicos nochistlenses de este género, aunada a la natural vocación por la música de Mariachi, indudablemente han adquirido una nueva visión que se ha traducido en una sólida preparación musical, como en la conformación de mariachis que se han ganado un gran prestigio a nivel nacional, ya que tanto Nicolás, Hipólito y la actitud profesional del resto de los músicos Puentes en la Ciudad de México, se han convertido en un referente obligado para las nuevas generaciones de músicos de éste municipio zacatecano.
Como se puede desprender, el amor a la música mariachera y el compromiso de la Familia Puentes en la vida cultural de Nochistlán se ha hecho presente por más de un siglo. Sin embargo, la música que hoy se conoce Música Jarabera y se reconoce como emblemática de Zacatecas, estuvo a punto de desaparecer del Patrimonio Cultural de los Zacatecanos y del mapa musical de México.
Sin embargo el Señor Nicolás Puentes Macías, desde el año 2000 se dio a la tarea de recuperar aquella música que alguna vez escucho de su padre Josafat y su tio Filomeno y de los grandes tocadores jaraberos de principios del siglo XX, que se reconocían por sus apellidos: Los Durán, los Esqueda, Los Sandoval, los Puentes los Ramírez; aunque localmente a esta música se le identificaba como jarabera o de rumbo, realmente era la música mariachera que era usual y cotidiana en los Altos de Jalisco y Sur de Zacatecas y que ya se venía tocando desde el siglo XIX con pocos músicos, con 2 violines, guitarra y tambora.
El resultado de esa descomunal tarea que Nicolás Puentes se echó a cuestas hace 18 años, se puede sintetizar diciendo que dicha música jarabera es ya emblemática de los zacatecanos; ésta ya se divulga en radiodifusoras culturales de todo el País con el conjunto Los Jaraberos de Nochistlán, y se ha escuchado en vivo en los más diversos foros culturales y festivales Nacionales en unos 15 estados del país con el conjunto Tradición Jarabera Zacatecana y Los Jaraberos de Nochistlán; a través de ballets folclóricos de varias partes de México se está tocando y danzando a lo largo del territorio nacional, incluso ya está rebasando las fronteras mexicanas mediante la radio internacional; es decir, esta música pasa por un interesante proceso renovación y resignificación, en síntesis vamos a tener música Jarabera para rato y ello, en gran parte, se lo debemos a Nicolás Puentes Macías y a la Familia Puentes en general.
